Muhammadu Buhari Promises To Investigate Allegations From Amnesty International


Due to the allegations made by the Amnesty International, Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari is set to review the report by the human rights group alleging widespread torture and extrajudicial killings by Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram.

The human right group accused the military of being responsible for the deaths of over 8,000 prisoners. The group listed senior military personnel’s, including the past servicing chief, Ihejirika.

The Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu, in a statement in Niamey, Niger Republic on Wednesday, that the President has received the report which he said contains many disturbing allegations.

“I assure you that your report will be looked into,” – President Buhari was quoted as saying.

He said without meaning to prejudice the outcome of any investigation, Nigerians needed to be reassured that “this administration will leave no stone unturned to promote the rule of law, and deal with all cases of human rights abuses”.
“Respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law are the life and soul of the democratic system. We will not tolerate or condone impunity and reckless disregard for human rights,”
– he said.
